Samaria Wants IDF Flyover Too, Says Council Deputy

Deputy Samaria Council head Yossi Dagan on Wednesday appealed to Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon for help – in giving residents of Samaria the same Independence Day “treat” that other Israelis have enjoyed for years.

That treat would be the traditional flyover of Israel Air Force planes, which takes place over many cities, including the Tel Aviv area, Jerusalem, Beersheva, Haifa, and others. The planes participating in the flyovers do the usual pilot “tricks,” like turning over the plane in midflight, making 180 degree about faces, “dueling” with other planes, and others.

In Tel Aviv, the flyover takes place along the beach – and the only way to get there is to walk, because traffic getting into the city on Yom Haatzmaut morning is next to impossible, because everyone from the center of the country, as well as from the Samaria region, is trying to get to the beach to watch the show. For most Samaria residents, that’s the closest show – and few succeed in having a chance to see it.

That’s a bit unfair, Dagan wrote in a letter to Yaalon. “For years it has been clear that residents of Samaria and other peripheral areas, such as Kiryat Shemona and Shlomi in the north, have never had an opportunity to see the flyover. I would ask you to direct the Air Force to allow these citizens of Israel the opportunity to enjoy the flyover as well, so they can enjoy the show live, and not just on television.”

Yaalon has not yet responded to the request.
