Rivlin: Abbas Speech Leaves Little Hope
September 26, 2011Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin on Monday said Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ address to the United Nations underscores why peace hasn’t been achieved.
According to Israel’s Channel 2 Radio, Rivlin told Japanese Ambassador Haruhisa Takeuchi on Monday that Abbas’ speech Friday “distorted the historical record and showed open hatred and hostility for the Jewish state.”
“It leaves little hope,” Rivlin told Takeuchi.
Rivlin’s comments were make after Takeuchi reiterated Japan’s long-time support for a two-state solution secured through direct negotiations between Israel and the PA, and pressed for negotiations to resume.
Last week Rivlin told a delegation of visiting European diplomats that the world community is more concerned with forging a ‘Palestinian state’ than preserving the Jewish state.
Rivlin added in that meeting that the PA statehood bid at the UN was “absurd” as it entailed a discussion of Israel’s future that effectively excluded Israel from making decisions about its own destiny.
