A Gaza-based news agency, Quds.net, quoted in Maariv/NRG, said Thursday that there are efforts underway to arrange a meeting between Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

The Quds.net report cited an unnamed source who said that Abbas has formally told the American leadership that he will be willing to meet Netanyahu wothout preconditions.

However, the same source is also quoted as saying that while Abbas “does not object strenuously” to meeting Netanyahu, “he wants to Israeli actions on the ground that would prepare the ground for such a meeting.”

The source added that the US leadership has been applying pressure to Abbas, to meet Netanyahu, and that such a meeting could take place in Jerusalem in the next few days.

The report is not confirmed by other sources.

Abbas said in August that “There is nothing at all that prevents a meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu at the right time for us to meet or at a time we need to meet.” He spoke at the time in Ramallah, at a news conference with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has reportedly been seeking to arrange a Netanyahu-Abbas meeting since June, at least.
