Regev: Galant Should be Ashamed of Himself

January 18, 2015

MK Miri Regev (Likud) on Sunday night had sharp criticism for Major General (res.) Yoav Galant, who hinted earlier that an IAF strike that killed Hezbollah’s Golan Commander, Jihad Mughniyeh, was politically timed to coincide with the election campaign.

“I heard the accusations of Yoav Galant over the complex and most important military operation in Syria,” Regev said, adding, “Galant should be ashamed of himself, he served in the IDF for so long and now he is implying that this is not the first time that military actions have served political propaganda.”.

“If this is the case then Galant himself was a party to such a failure and did nothing,” she charged.

Regev said that in all her time in the army she had never come across what Galant had hinted at. “I, who served as the IDF Spokeswoman, never heard of an attack that is not motivated by considerations related to the security of Israel,” she said.

Regev proceeded to mock Galant, who recently joined Moshe Kahlon’s Kulanu party and is running in the upcoming election.

“Galant is a veteran military man but a young politician and I suggest to him that he not make statements in such an irresponsible manner,” she said.

Earlier Sunday, the Jewish Home and Likud responded with anger to Galant’s statement, with Jewish Home Chairman Naftali Bennett saying that “accusing the government of carrying out military activity that stems from elections-related considerations is the lowest depth to which the current election campaign has sunk.”

“Without going into whether or not the event was accurately reported, Galant’s statement is unnecessary and disappointing, and can serve as ammunition for the state’s enemies,” he added. “I call on Moshe Kahlon to instruct Galant to take back what he said before damage is done.”

Likud Deputy Minister Ofir Akunis also called the statement “a new low.” He also called out to Kahlon to tell Galant “to stop chattering.”
