Recount Spells Hope for Hotovely

The votes at 29 polling stations in Likud’s primary elections last week will be recounted because of a discrepancy between the votes counted at the polling stations and the numbers that were entered into the computer for those stations.

The recount may change the order in which candidates are placed in Likud’s list. This is most critical for Deputy Minister Tzipi Hotovely, who is currently in the 26th spot. She is only a few hundred votes behind ex-minister Avi Dichter, who is in spot number 20.

Should the recount place Hotovely above Dichter, they will switch places. The spots from number 21 to number 25 are reserved for candidates who are not elected through primaries.

Other candidates’s placement may also be affected. The gap between Knesset Speaker MK Yuli Edelstein and Minister Yisrael Katz – who are in second and third places in the list – is less than 600 votes.

The gaps between Minister Tzachi Hanegbi and the candidates immediately above and below him in the list are also a few hundred votes.

In the Druze village of Beit Jan, MK Hanegbi reportedly received 250 votes – although there are only 197 registered Likud members there. Speaker Edelstein received about 1,000 votes more than was possible, in a Jerusalem polling station.

MK Moshe Feiglin, who was bumped down to the unrealistic 36th spot, is not expected to enter the realistic zone, in any case. He said that he intends to announce his future political path on Monday.
