The chief rabbi for Samaria and the community of Elon Moreh, Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, was questioned by the Civil Service Commission’s disciplinary division on Monday.

Rabbi Levanon was under investigation for two complaints filed against him by the Religious Action Center and the Coalition Against Racism. The Religious Action Center is the political branch of the Reform Movement.

The first complaint was in response Rabbi Levanon’s remarks following the wave of car attacks the occurred earlier this year. He insisted that the government should prevent fuel from reaching the Arab sector for a week as a form of collective punishment for the attacks.

The second complaint dealt with the rabbi’s support for MK Bezalel Smotrich’s (Jewish Home) comments on separating Jewish and Arabs mothers in hospital maternity wards.

In response, Rabbi Levanon’s students stated: “The Reform Movement has crossed a red line in silencing its opponents within the democratic process. We will not remain silent on the issue.”
