Poll: Herzog and Livni Joint List Would Be Largest Party
December 4, 2014A new poll shows that Opposition and Labor party chair Yitzhak Herzog and Hatnua head Tzipi Livni would be the largest party if they unified into a leftist front – although they still likely wouldn’t be able to stop Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s chances of forming a new coalition.
Livni and Yesh Atid chairperson Yair Lapid were fired by Netanyahu on Tuesday, collapsing the coalition and leading to March 17 elections. Netanyahu accused the two of holding a “putsch,” and trying to improve their position by attacking from within the government.
The new poll, conducted by the Rafi Smith Institute for Globes, shows that a united list of Herzog’s Labor and Livni’s Hatnua would gain 24 seats and become the largest party, outstripping Netanyahu’s Likud which would receive 23.
Jewish Home, which reportedly could be split by Tekuma faction head minister Uri Ariel, would come in at third with 16 mandates, as would Yisrael Beytenu at 16 seats. The hareidi Shas and former Likud minister Moshe Kahlon’s new party would have nine apiece.
Lapid’s Yesh Atid would receive seven seats, down even further from the nine seats it was predicted as getting in a previous poll. The party currently has 19 mandates.
The far-left Meretz and hareidi United Torah Judaism would each get five, and the three Arab parties would get 11 seats all together.
One party that was not represented in the poll is Otzma Leyisrael headed by former MK Dr. Michael Ben-Ari, who announced the nationalist party would be running in the elections after narrowly missing out of the last elections.
