The Israel Police’s Traffic Department issued a recommendation Monday, to require drivers of e-bikes to get a drivers’ license, and to set the minimum age for driving the vehicles at 16.

The issue will be debated in the Knesset’s Interior Ministry Monday.

According to regulations issued last year, the minimum age for driving an e-bike is 14, and drivers aged under 16 may only do so in designated bike paths. The maximum allowed speed is 25 kph (15 mph).

However, police have had difficulty enforcing the regulations, especially when it came to forcing young drivers off sidewalks and onto roads, where they are in danger of being struck by cars.

The police’s recommendations follow a spate of accidents involving e-bikes and pedestrians. In February, an 85-year-old resident of Givatayim, Antonio Raia, was killed in a hit-and-run accident involving an e-bike.

On Thursday, dozens of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv against the e-bike danger, after a 3-year-old girl was hit by an e-bike.
