Polar Vortex Lifting, Another On The Way?

The polar vortex that recently struck North America left chilling snowscapes and massive damage in its wake. The storm froze the Niagra Falls with record breaking low temperatures. The frigid weather also cost the US economy $5 billion.

Frozen work schedules and burst pipes needing replacement led to the hefty price tag, reports The Guardian, although the damage doesn’t even come close to that inflicted by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, that caused an estimated $65 billion in property damage alone.

A polar vortex is an area of cold low pressure that typically circulates around the Arctic during the winter. While the freezing temperatures appear to have lifted, AccuWeather reported Saturday that another wave of the polar vortex is set to strike North America later in the month.

“We will likely see a piece of the polar vortex break off and set up just north of the Great Lakes spanning Jan. 16 to 20,” said Forecaster Paul Pastelok. Pastelok added that “this next main arctic blast will not rival, nor will be as extensive as the event this past week.”

Mark Schaffel of Chicago recently spoke to Arutz Sheva about the stormy weather that has been raging through the US which was returning to more normal temperatures heading into last weekend as schools reopened.
