A Palestinian Arab who was arrested on rock throwing charges and was being held in a military detention facility in Gush Etzion was accidentally released, Channel 2 News reported on Wednesday.
According to the report, after the oversight was discovered, an arrest warrant for the suspect was issued, but so far he has not been caught.
The soldier who accidentally freed the prisoner was sentenced to 14 days in jail.
Security sources said that the incident was a serious one, noting, “This facility also holds terrorists with blood on their hands, and this should not happen. The fact that this was only discovered a few days after it occurred only increases the severity of the oversight.”
The IDF said in response, “The detainee in question was in the facility for violating public order. The case in question was discovered about half an hour after the incident occurred, and was immediately transferred to the Israeli police for further treatment. The sergeant who wrongfully released the detainee was given a disciplinary hearing and was sentenced to jail.”
