A Border Police officer who last month was filmed drawing his side-arm and taking aim at haredi protesters was questioned under warning, police revealed on Wednesday.

The incident in question took place during protests on May 4th by members of the Yerushalmi faction – followers of Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach, an outspoken opponent of haredi enlistment in the IDF.

When a haredi yeshiva student was arrested in Eilat for draft-dodging, followers or Rabbi Auerbach launched demonstrations across the country.

At one such demonstration near Haim Bar Lev Boulevard in Jerusalem, several Border Police officers were filmed attempting to hold back a group of protesters. While one officer allegedly beat demonstrators, another was filmed drawing his pistol, cocking it, and then pointing it protesters.

Some two weeks after a copy of the footage was publicized by Channel 2, police announced that two officers involved in the incident were under investigation – one for aiming his weapon at unarmed protesters, and the other for beating demonstrators.

One of the participants in the demonstration said the event was peaceful – until police intervened.

“There was a march along the sidewalk which was going on with no issues, but the police couldn’t just sit by and watch the demonstration pass peacefully and had to go wild.”

“They went wild, with no restraint, including threatening protesters on the sidewalk with an armed gun.”
