Obama Launches New Twitter Feed

May 19, 2015

United States President Barack Obama on Monday launched his own Twitter feed, the White House confirmed, according to the BBC.

Obama’s Twitter handle is @POTUS (President Of The United States) and within few hours he had attracted over a million followers, the report noted.

“Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account” said Obama’s first tweet.

The president has another official feed, @BarackObama, run by Organizing for Action staff, which was launched in 2007 and has 59.3 million followers. The president initials tweets he writes himself with the letters BO, noted the BBC.

“The @POTUS Twitter account will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him,” the White House said Monday.

“President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and @POTUS will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them,” it added.

One of the first Twitter exchanges Obama had with the new account was with former President Bill Clinton.

“Welcome to @Twitter, @POTUS! One question: Does that username stay with the office? #askingforafriend,” Clinton tweeted.

Obama then replied, “Good question, @billclinton. The handle comes with the house. Know anyone interested in @FLOTUS?”
