Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has decided to support a bill by Likud MK Yoav Kish that would prohibit political organizations from accepting donations during an election campaign, Channel 2 News reported Sunday.
The bill would target organizations such as V15, which worked against Netanyahu and the Likud during the last elections. Reports said that V15 was funded for the most part by organizations from the United States and Europe in an attempt to unseat Netanyahu and appoint a leftist coalition instead.
According to Channel 2, the bill is designed to prevent the activities of political organizations during an election campaign. An organization that would conduct polls, register voters or publish ads on the Internet and in the media – will not be able to receive donations totaling more than 20 thousand shekels a month.
In a dramatic press conference before the last election, Likud MKs presented what they said was evidence that V15 had worked with non-Israeli interests to swing the election toward Zionist Union chairpersons Yitzhak Herzog and Tzipi Livni.
However, the Likud later dropped a petition to the Jerusalem District Court against V15 when it failed to find a “smoking gun” linking V15 to the Zionist Union or another leftist party.
Responding on Sunday to reports of the new bill, V15, which is now called “Darkenu” (lit. Our Way), said, “Israel is bigger and better than Bibi Netanyahu. We are a movement which numbers hundreds of thousands of Israelis, who want to see Israel have the leadership it deserves. V15 – or ‘victory in 2015’ – has been working in recent months under the name ‘Darkenu’.
“Israel is not Turkey and we will not let Netanyahu not behave like [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan and trample the democratic right to protest against the worst government in Israel’s history. ‘Darkenu’ calls on all those to whom Israel is important to join the movement,” it added.
