Netanyahu rejects coalition crisis compromise

May 29, 2016

Health Minister Ya’akov Litzman (United Torah Judaism) suggested a compromise to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in the coalition crisis with Education Minister Naftali Bennett (Jewish Home), it was revealed Sunday – but Netanyahu refused.

Bennett has threatened to bolt the coalition over his demand to have military secretaries appointed to every minister on the Security Cabinet, following a report indicating mishandling of the Cabinet in times of war.

According to Litzman’s proposal, the head of the National Security Council (NSC) or his deputy would be responsible for reporting to ministers until a committee that Netanyahu has announced as a means of placating Bennett finishes its research, and proposes ways to improve the briefing of Cabinet ministers in three weeks’ time.

Jewish Home has rejected Netanyahu’s committee proposal, calling it “spin.”

While Bennett is said to have agreed to Litzman’s compromise with the NSC head, Netanyahu rejected the offer.

The suggestion to bring NSC chief Ya’akov Nagel into the picture comes after Nagel last Wednesday spoke about Bennett’s demand to fix the Cabinet’s flaws with Channel 2 for the first time. According to him, “ahead of every cabinet hearing, every minister who wants to can prepare for the discussion.”

He said that the NSC produces a daily intelligence report on ongoing security matters and other issues, and that any minister who wanted to could receive this report and additional information that details the operational plans of the IDF.

According to Nagel, only a lack of initiative prevented Cabinet ministers from receiving a full briefing to prepare for Cabinet meetings.

The standoff between Bennett and Netanyahu comes as incoming Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu is looking to join the coalition, in a move Jewish Home has threatened to oppose if its demand on the Security Cabinet is not met.
