Netanyahu in Last Minute Demolition Dilemma
November 1, 2011
Marathon meetings have been held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the last 24 hours as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu weighs his response to the High Court regarding demolition of several Jewish Judea and Samaria neighborhoods.
About 1,000 men, women and children are to lose their homes in the demolitions that have been ordered by the High Court.
According to ultra-leftist mouthpiece Haaretz, Defense Minister Ehud Barak has decided to tear down the community of Amona, which leftist NGOs claim was built on land privately owned by Arabs.
The paper says that the High Court will soon receive a formal letter from the Defense Minister saying that the community – which numbers about 50 families – will be torn down by the end of 2012.
The report adds that all 25 homes in Givat Assaf will be razed by the end of 2011, as will parts of Maaleh Rechavam, Givat HaRoeh, Givat HaDegel, Bnei Adam and Mitzpeh Yitzhar. Certain structures in Beit El will be razed by April 2012, and others in an extension of Beit El – by May of that year. Migron is expected to be felled by the end of March.
Jewish Home MK Zevulun Orlev has warned that the wave of demolitions could endanger the Netanyahu coalition. However, Orlev has been known to make similar pronouncements in past years without following up on them.
