Netanyahu: Cruelty and murder in the heart of Tel Aviv

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan on Wednesday night visited the Sarona Market in in Tel Aviv, the site of an earlier terrorist shooting attack in which four Israelis were murdered.

“This is an incident of cruelty, murder and terrorism in the heart of Tel Aviv. The attack was carried by people who do not appreciate life,” Netanyahu said, adding that “greater tragedy was prevented by the determination of the local citizens, who attacked the terrorists.”

“We discussed a series of defensive and offensive measures we will adopt in the face of this attack,” Netanyahu continued. “We are in the midst of a difficult period. We will act firmly and intelligently.”

Liberman called the attack “a despicable murder of innocent people, another attempt to harm the fabric of life of the State of Israel.”

“The IDF has been acting decisively and quickly from the moment it learned of the incident. We will take all the necessary steps. This is not the time to give statements. We do not intend to accept the situation,” he added.

Erdan noted that “We are in a sensitive time period ahead of the Shavuot holiday and of course Ramadan. We will increase the presence of the police in all locations in order to produce a sense of security.”

The State Department on Wednesday night condemned the attack, which spokesman Mark Toner described as “cowardly”.

“The United States condemns today’s horrific terrorist attack in Tel Aviv in the strongest possible terms. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and our hopes for a quick recovery for those wounded,” said State Department spokesman Mark Toner.

“These cowardly attacks against innocent civilians can never be justified. We are in touch with Israeli authorities to express our support and concern,” he added.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, called on the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council to condemn terrorism in the wake of the terrorist attack in Tel Aviv’s Sarona Market.
