Netanyahu and US envoy meet after ‘settlement’ tiff
January 19, 2016A day after US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro publicly tongue-lashed Israeli policy in Judea-Samaria, he met with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.
Shapiro sparked outrage on Monday when he accused Israel of applying separate “standards” of justice for Israelis and Palestinians – a charge which the Prime Minister’s Office blasted as “unacceptable and incorrect.”
However, according to a Channel 2 report on Tuesday, the meeting between Netanyahu and Shapiro was both positive and cordial as they attempted to set the record straight after the incident.
Shapiro, accompanying a delegation of members of Congress to the Prime Minister’s Office, was invited to a private meeting with Netanyahu, which lasted for about half an hour.
Sources in Netanyahu’s office confirmed after the meeting that he and Shapiro met to signal there is no tension and the incident is behind them.
While speaking at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv on Monday, Shapiro sharply criticized Israel, asserting the US government was “concerned and perplexed by Israel’s strategy on settlements.””
He then took issue with Israeli security forces, accusing them of being too lenient against extremist right-wing violence.
“Too much Israeli vigilantism in the West Bank goes on unchecked,” he charged, adding that “there is lack of thorough investigations… at times it seems Israel has two standards of adherence to rule of law in the West Bank – one for Jews and one for Palestinians.”
The Prime Minister’s Office charged in response that “Israel enforces its laws equally against Israelis and Palestinians,” adding that it wouldn’t countenance attempts to blame “settlements” for the stalemate with the Palestinians.
