Netanyahu aide Avichai Mandelblit selected as next A-G

The Professional Committee for Selection of Candidates for Attorney General announced Sunday that it has selected Major General (res.) Avichai Mandelblit, the former Chief Military Prosecutor and current government secretary, for the extremely powerful legal position.

The committee, headed by retired Supreme Court President Asher Grunis, informed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked that Mandelblit was the only candidate who received the support of four out of five committee members, as required.

The committee held 14 meetings to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various candidates.

Mandelblit was also known to be Netanyahu and Shaked’s favored candidate.

Addition committee members were lawyers Moshe Nisim and Yehiel Katz, Prof. Gabi Shalev and MK Anat Berko (Likud).
