Naval Commando Boards Suspect Ship

Soldiers from the Shayetet 13 Naval Commando boarded a ship in the Mediterranean Sunday, after a routine naval patrol suspected that it is carrying weapons.

The ship, the HS Beethoven, is reportedly flying the Liberian flag and was headed to Gaza. Its cargo is being examined, but as of 9:00 p.m. no weapons were found.

The ship was boarded about 160 miles from shore, according to the IDF Website. It was reportedly sailing from Syria or Lebanon to Egypt, or toward Gaza.

The ship’s captain agreed to the IDF search of the ship. If no weapons are found on board it will be allowed to continue on course.

Just over a year ago, the IDF intercepted another ship flying a Liberian flag, the Victoria, and discovered a large amount of weapons intended for Gaza.
