The civil war in Syria once again spilled into Israel on Wednesday night, as a mortar shell that was fired during the fighting between President Bashar Al-Assad’s and rebels exploded in an open area in the Golan Heights.

There were no physical injuries or damages as a result of the explosion.

Channel 2 News reported that the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. local time, when residents of one the communities near the border reported that they heard an exploding sound.

IDF forces that were called to the scene found the remains of the shell and neutralized it. The IDF believes that the mortar shell was fired as part of the fighting that has been going on near the border over the past 24 hours and that it was not deliberately fired towards Israeli territory.

Last month, Israel destroyed an unspecified Syrian target, after fire from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights border damaged an IDF vehicle.

That incident occurred 24 hours after IDF soldiers carrying out routine security assignments along the border with Syria reported that shots were fired in their direction from the Syrian side of the border. No one was reported hurt in the incident.

Israel later accused Syrian forces of trying to provoke conflict following the border clash.

“This week’s events are part of a disturbing pattern of events intended to spark provocation with Israel,” said Israel’s UN ambassador Ron Prosor in a letter to the UN Security Council.

“Responsibility for the event rests entirely with the government of Syria which instructed its troops to fire on the jeep. Despite numerous complaints, they have persisted in these acts of aggression,” Prosor added in the letter.
