Middle East Expert Barry Rubin Passes Away at 64

Renowned analyst, counterterrorism expert and writer Barry Rubin passed away Monday morning at the age of 64.

Rubin succumbed in Tel Aviv after a long battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Judith Colp Rubin, and two children; funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced. 

Rubin wrote a plethora of books on the Middle East covering a wide variety of subjects, including the Israel-Arab conflict, democracy in the Arab world, and the ongoing Syrian civil war. In addition, he maintained a blog, The Rubin Report, and was a frequent contributor to Arutz Sheva

He also was the director of the Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center, a professor at the InterDisciplinary Center (IDC) in Herzliya, and edited two Middle-Eastern affairs magazines: PJ Media and Turkish Studies

The US native appeared on several American news shows, including NightlineThe Larry King Show, and the news hours for many major US networks. 

Tributes on social media poured in mourning the loss, and remember Rubin for his academic brilliance and principled commitment to Israel. 

“Thinking about Barry Rubin, a very special mentor, friend as well as a tireless and profound analyst,” David Reaboi, Vice President for Strategic Communications at one of the US’s national security organizations wrote on his Facebook page. 

“Professor Barry Rubin will be remembered his wisdom and acute understanding and support for Israel,” political analyst and filmmaker David Semple tweeted Monday. “A sad loss.”
