MDA gets largest-ever donation for blood center

American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA) has received a donation of $25 million, the largest single gift the emergency services provider has ever received, according to JTA.

The Atlanta-based Marcus Foundation donated the money to build a new blood services center in Ramla that will be better protected against enemy attacks than the current blood center at Tel Hashomer.

The new blood center, to be named the Marcus National Blood Services Center, will be less vulnerable to rocket attacks from Gaza, AFMDA explained in a news release.

It will have ventilation systems to counter chemical attacks, and house modern laboratories and blood-processing units.

“MDA ensures that the people of Israel have a secure blood supply — the blood they need, when they need it,” Bernie Marcus, the foundation’s co-founder, said in the news release.

“We are overwhelmingly indebted to The Marcus Foundation for their remarkable generosity in making the largest gift in AFMDA’s history,” said David M. Frankel, CEO of AFMDA. “It speaks to MDA’s critical role in Israel as one of the country’s most important national organizations. But it also recognizes the leadership and vision of the Marcus family, and other donors like them, who have taken meaningful action to help alleviate the daily threat faced by Israelis.”

MDA’s goal is to raise $115 million to build the new blood center. With the Marcus Foundation gift, AFMDA has now raised $72 million toward the goal of building the new facility.
