Border Police officers shot and killed a man as he attempted to infiltrate Israel on Thursday night. The incident was under a gag order until Friday morning.
A second man was shot and wounded in the incident.
IDF commanders believe the two were attempting to smuggle drugs.
The two were spotted by a patrol after crossing the Egyptian border into southern Israel. Officers followed the standard procedure when arresting a suspect deemed a possible terror threat, which includes calls to stop and warning gunshots, and if those are not heeded, gunfire aimed at incapacitating the suspect.
“It is important to note that the phenomenon of illegal infiltration to Israeli territory from the western border is exploited by terrorist groups to carry out attacks against Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers,” a military spokesperson said.
“The IDF will continue to act against any threat to the security of the state of Israel and its residents,” they added.
