Malaysian officials have confirmed that they have found the debris field for AirAsia Flight QZ8501, which disappeared on Sunday over the Java Sea with 162 people on board. 

The debris field, which includes several bodies, a life jacket, and a cabin door, was found by Indonesian military officials Tuesday floating in the sea off Borneo island. 

Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo said he is “95% sure” the debris field is from the missing jet. 

“For the time being it can be confirmed that it’s the AirAsia plane,” Indonesian civil aviation chief Djoko Murjatmodjo told AFP Tuesday morning.

He added that the debris field was found 160km (100 miles) south-west of Pangkalan Bun, a town in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan.

AirAsia flight QZ8501 from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, an Airbus A320-200l, lost contact with air traffic controllers on Sunday morning. 

The flight left Juanda International Airport (JIA) a few minutes after its regularly scheduled flight time of 5:35 am local time and was due to arrive in Singapore three hours later, at 8:30 am.  

The aircraft lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control while flying over Pulau Belitung at 7:24am local time, it said – 42 minutes after departure and an hour before it was scheduled to land. 

The search and rescue operation for the missing plane has been led by Indonesia, with assistance from Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. South Korea, Thailand, China, and France also offered their assistance, according to BBC.
