The Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team on Sunday evening won the Euroleague championship game in Milan after defeating Real Madrid by a score of 98-86.
While Real had the lead for much of the game, at one point leading by 11 points, Maccabi won the game in regulation. Tyrese Rice hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds.
Following the win, thousands came out to celebrate both on the streets of Tel Aviv and Milan. President Shimon Peres called Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt to congratulate him.
“The entire country is yellow,” Peres said, referring to the color of Maccabi’s uniform.
“You demonstrated what determination is and I almost had a heart attack, as the entire team fought like tigers and lions… you do not know what you did to Israel. This is the best and the most exciting gift,” he told Blatt.
Culture and Sport Minister Limor Livnat also congratulated Maccabi Tel Aviv over the victory.
“Against all odds, but with endless faith, Maccabi Tel Aviv today made another big step in its illustrious history and has brought great honor to Israeli sports. Thank you for a magical and memorable evening,” she said.
