Likud MK seeks to restrict access to ‘inappropriate’ websites

MK Mickey Zohar (Likud) seeks to censor the internet: Ae presented a new bill which intends to limit the ability to access gambling, pornographic and other harmful content on the Internet.

Under the proposal, the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will filter harmful content unless specifically request by the customer.

The bill is intended to prevent children under the age of 18 from accessing inappropriate content for their age group.

“In the non-virtual world there are laws protecting minors and preventing them from venturing into sex stores and gambling centers, but online children can be exposed to content unsuitable for their age,” Zohar explained to Army Radio.

“The internet is a public space and along with the right and freedom of expression for every citizen, there’s also the right and freedom of children to be in the public domain without encountering inappropriate content for their age,” he added.

According to Zohar, it will not be difficult to remove the filter. Customers will be required to provide an identification number to verify their age and the ISP will lift the ban on the content.
