Jordan’s King Abdullah II: Israel Must Have Security
October 24, 2011Jordanian King Abdullah II told participants at the World Economic Forum this week that Israel must be assured of its security. More than 1,000 people from 50 nations participated in the two-day conference held on the Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea.
A peace deal between Israel and the Palestinian Authority must ensure Israel’s security and acceptance, and lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state, Abdullah said.
The Hashemite king also criticized those who he said sought to close the door to peace.
“Our region stands today at the gates to the future,” he said, emphasizing four crucial areas to focus on: dignity, opportunity, democracy, and ‘peace and justice’.”
During the conference, Abdullah made time to meet with PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on the sidelines of the gathering.
Also on Monday, a new Jordanian Cabinet was sworn into office, led by former International Criminal Court Deputy Chief Justice Awn Khasawneh, now Jordan’s newest Prime Minister.
The 30-member Cabinet includes 25 new ministers, among them a former Central Bank government as finance minister, two women managing the higher education and social development portfolios and a veteral journalist as information minister.
Opposition Islamists were allegedly not included in the new government, although Khasawneh is reported to have warm relations with Jordan’s powerful Muslim Brotherhood.
Khasawneh told the king in a letter on Monday, “The government will coordinate with all political powers and civil society groups in Jordan to prepare laws that govern political life and ensure democracy, justice, transparency and integrity… fair elections are key to democracy.”
