Jerusalem Develops NIS 10 Million Park for Skaters

Jerusalem skaters now have a place to call their own. The city has opened a park dedicated to skaters, skateboarders, and other “extreme sport” lovers. The park was inaugarated Monday by Mayor Nir Barkat.

The park was established in the city’s Gan Hapa’amon municipal park. It is 2.5 dunam (about half an acre) large, and was developed at a cost of NIS 10 million.

Barkat decided to promote the project after being asked to do so by young skaters who complained that they had no place in town to practice their craft. Police, they said, would not allow them to use city streets for recreational skating, citing them for numerous violations.

“I was very happy to adopt this project after being asked to do so by Jerusalem youths,” Barkat said. “Thanks to them Jerusalem joins other cities in the world with advanced skate parks. Together with other advanced sports facilities for volleyball, and with equipment for other challenging sports, Gan Hapa’amon will become a favorite destination for Israelis from around the country,” Barkat said.
