It’s here: Netflix arrives in Israel

January 7, 2016

The popular video streaming service Netflix on Wednesday finally arrived in Israel, part of a move which saw the service made available in 130 countries.

However, at this stage, the streaming service will be available only in English and Arabic, and there is no subtitled content, according to Haaretz.

The newspaper reported that the company conducted market studies in Israel leading up to its global expansion, to examine if Israelis would pay for the entertainment content service. Company representatives also refused to sell Netflix productions’ broadcasting rights to local players HOT and Yes, so as not to undermine the platform’s success in Israel.

Netflix also considered a more expansive presence in Israel that would include local offices and content translation, but eventually decided to offer their service in Israel without a physical presence there.

The main question is whether Netflix will pose a significant threat to cable company HOT or satellite company Yes.

While the company’s services are expected to present a threat to these two companies on demand services, Israeli customers will still need to subscribe to HOT or Yes in order to watch their favorite Israeli television channels.

In addition, noted Haaretz, the threat to the on demand services may remain minimal so long as Hebrew is not supported by Netflix.

Netflix subscriptions in Israel range from $7.99 to $11.99 per month, according to the newspaper.
