Israeli shooting suspect nabbed in Kiev

An Israeli citizen was arrested three months ago in Kiev, Walla! News learned Sunday, and may be extradited to Israel on charges of attempted murder, use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice.

Whether or not the unnamed Israeli will be extradited depends on the outcome of a lengthy legal process. While a Kiev local court ruled to extradite him, the suspect’s lawyer has appealed on grounds of granting him refugee status to avoid the extradition.

The suspect traveled to Ukraine to run away from those charges, after being implicated in a shooting outside a nightclub in northern Israel almost two years ago.

The suspect shot at patrons for unknown reasons; one person was wounded and put in moderate to serious condition. The shooter fled the scene, and later fled Israel.

Ukrainian authorities finally nabbed the suspect in mid-February, following an international arrest warrant against him. Since then, he has remained in state custody, and courts recently upheld the extradition order – although his attorneys are fighting the ruling. The defense argues that the suspect was forced to sign documents unlawfully after miscommunication with an interpreter.
