Israeli Delegation in Cairo to Discuss Sinai Terrorism

An Israeli delegation arrived at the Cairo airport on Wednesday on a private jet, an airport official told the Palestinian Authority-based Ma’an news agency.

According to the official, the Israeli delegation discussed the recent events in the Sinai.

The delegation was greeted by Egyptian security officials, Ma’an reported. It will meet other Egyptian officials to discuss the security issues in the Sinai and bilateral relations between the two countries.

The official added that the Israeli delegation consisted of three officials, and the visit was expected to last several hours.

The Israeli delegation’s arrival in Cairo comes as Egypt continues to deal with the terrorism in the Sinai Peninsula.

On Wednesday, at least six Egyptian soldiers were killed in a double suicide bomb attack in the Sinai.

The attack wounded another ten soldiers and seven civilians. One of the blasts hit the military intelligence headquarters in Rafah on the Gaza border and the other explosion hit a nearby checkpoint.

Over the weekend, at least 10 Islamist terrorists were killed as Egypt’s army launched an air and ground assault on terrorists in the restive Sinai Peninsula

Twenty others were wounded and 15 arrested, according to security officials.

The Sinai has become increasingly lawless since the fall of former president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, and the terror attacks have only increased since the removal of Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi in July.

Under the terms of the peace agreement signed between Israel and Egypt, any Egyptian military moves in the Sinai must be coordinated with Israel, which has thus far allowed Egypt to crack down on Sinai terrorists.
