Israeli Coach Leads Russia to Olympic Medal

There will be one Israeli returning from the 2012 London Olympic Games with a medal. The only problem is that he was playing for the wrong team.

David Blatt, Israeli- American coach of the Russian men’s basketball team, won a bronze medal for leading his team to victory, beating Argentina 81-77 in a third-place playoff Sunday morning.

“How sweet it is,” Blatt said after the game, according to Reuters.

Blatt, who also coaches Maccabi Tel Aviv, attributed his success to his background in Israeli sports.

He played for several Israeli teams until he was injured in 1993, when he began coaching.

Blatt was brought on to coach the Russian national team in 2006 and helped lead them to victory in the 2007 European Championship.

Blatt played for Princeton University from 1977 to 1981 and on the gold medal-winning U.S. team in the 1981 Maccabiah Games.
