Iran claims Saudi Arabia deliberately bombed embassy in Yemen

Iran has accused Saudi Arabia of intentionally bombing its embassy during an air strike in Sanaa, Yemen.

Iranian State media reported that a spokesperson for the country’s Foreign Ministry said that members of his staff had been wounded during a “deliberate” attack against the Iranian Embassy in Yemen.

“This deliberate action by Saudi Arabia is a violation of all international conventions that protect diplomatic missions,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari told state television.

“The Saudi government is responsible for the damage caused and for the situation of members of staff who were injured,” Ansari added, without specifying when the alleged strike took place.

Despite the claims, however, AP reports that no damage is visible at the site of the Iranian Embassy in Sanaa.

A spokesperson for the Saudi Arabian-led Arab coalition said that the multiple airstrikes in the region in recent days had targeted rebel missile launchers. The spokesperson further added that the Houthi rebels in Yemen had turned civilian structures, including abandoned embassies into operation headquarters.

Iran’s accusations against Saudi Arabia were made at the height of tensions between the two countries, fueled by Saudi Arabia’s execution of firebrand Shiite cleric, Nimr al-Nimr.
