IDF Orders Release of Palestinian MP

An Israeli military court said Thursday it had ordered the release of Palestinian legislator Khalida Jarrar, who was detained at her home in Ramallah on April 2, AFP reported.

At the time of her arrest, the IDF had said she posed unspecified “substantial security risks”.

Jarrar is a senior member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist organization.

Last August, she was served an order banning her from her home in Ramallah and sending her to Jericho to the east of Jerusalem not far from the Dead Sea and said at the time that she would disobey the order.

Jarrar was indicted last month on charges of being a member of the banned PFLP, holding an administrative post in the PFLP, as well as conducting a series of public activities for the PFLP.

It also accused her of inciting to abduct IDF soldiers so as to negotiate the release of jailed Arab terrorists.

On Thursday, however, the IDF said that it had incriminating testimony proving Jarrar had engaged in illegal activities, but noted she was retaining her right to remain silent.

The military court also noted that implementation of the decision would be delayed by 72 hours to enable the prosecution to appeal.

Palestinian prisoner rights group Addameer said Jarrar faced 12 charges because of her role as a lawmaker and for her “campaigning for prisoners”.

“Addameer considers the arrest of Mrs. Jarrar to be a political one, and calls for her immediate release,” it said in a statement quoted by AFP, implying she may be kept in custody despite the release order.
