IDF Kills 2 Hezbollah Terrorists Planting Bomb on Syrian Border
March 5, 2014IDF forces clashed with terrorists on Tuesday night in the northern Golan Heights. Soldiers opened fire on terrorists who placed an explosive on the border fence with Syria.
“Earlier today, two Hezbollah-affiliated terrorists were identified attempting to plant an explosive device near the Israel-Syria border in the northern Golan Heights. IDF forces… fired towards the suspects (and) hits were identified,” the army said in a statement.
A group of suspicious figures approached the fence in the middle of the night, and attempted to blow up the barrier. The IDF responded by shooting from light weapons and firing artillery shells to wipe out the terror attempt.
The IDF added “this incident is no surprise, and we believe that clashes with Hezbollah could follow in the coming days,” reports AFP.
A source in IDF emphasized Hezbollah’s responsibility for the attack, after the threats of revenge towards Israel made last week by the terror group after a transfer of missiles from Syria was destroyed in an air strike. The IDF noted “special forces were deployed at the border with Syria” in response to the threats.
The missiles, which were destroyed in the strike near the Syrian-Lebanese border, were reportedly able to carry warheads heavier and more dangerous than almost all of Hezbollah’s current massive arsenal.
In threatening Israel, Hezbollah warned last Wednesday that it would strike at “the appropriate time, place and means.”
A bomb exploded on the Golan Heights border with Syria last December in a similar attack targeting the IDF. That incident ended with no casualties.
Explosives have also been placed on the border with Gaza, with one bombing occurring in January. The Gaza border fence has been a constant target of terror attacks.
It has been feared that the border with Syria may become a serious security threat given dangers of the Syrian war spilling over. In January, a mortar was fired from Syria over the border, and shots were fired at IDF troops from a Syrian army outpost. Nevertheless, Israel sent humanitarian aid to Syria the following day.
