A prominent Satmar Hasid from New York donated $50,000 to charity just two hours before he died in a North Miami Beach drowning accident, it was revealed Wednesday.
Rabbi Yitzhak Rosenberg donated the money to the Satmar Institutions of Jerusalem, BHadrei Haderim reports, following a phone call from its leader, Rabbi Zanvil Foigel. Rabbi Foigel is currently in the US.
Rosenberg and businessman Rabbi Haim Parnes drowned Tuesday after being pulled into a riptide along a North Miami Beach beachfront. Three others sustained serious injuries.
Wednesday morning, a private plane transported their bodies to Orange County, where they will be buried; thousands of people are expected at the funeral, according to local news reports.
Both Rosenberg and Parnes were well-known figures in the Satmar community, in Willamsburg, Brooklyn and Kiryas Joel, respectively.
