A Hamas military court in Gaza on Monday sentenced a Palestinian Arab to death for allegedly providing information to Israel said to have led to Palestinians being killed, judicial sources said.
The 28-year-old man was identified only by the initials N.A. and no other details on the accusations against him were provided by Hamas, the Islamist movement that rules Gaza, according to AFP.
According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, 157 people have been sentenced to death in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority (PA) since its creation in 1994. Thirty-two have been executed, including 30 in Gaza.
All execution orders must, in theory, be approved by PA chairman Mahmud Abbas before they can be carried out, but Hamas no longer recognizes his legitimacy.
Hamas has a history of capturing alleged collaborators and executing them; at the very end of Operation Protective Edge, dozens of Gazans were rounded up and shot in a brutal killing spree.
A report by Amnesty International in May revealed that Hamas killed at least 23 political rivals as “collaborators” during Protective Edge in a series of possible war crimes.
The PA condemned the executions that were conducted without trial, amid speculation that Hamas was taking advantage of the situation to wipe out key members of its Fatah rival that is headed by Abbas.
The executions led Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to famously compare Hamas with the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization, telling the UN “ISIS is Hamas, Hamas is ISIS.”
