Hamas ‘Naval Commando’ Drowns Off the Coast of Gaza

The Hamas terrorist group announced this morning the death of a senior “naval commando” in a “work accident” Sunday morning.

Muaman al-Bakhri drowned off the coast of Gaza during a training exercise, the Islamist group said, according to Kol Yisrael Radio‘s Palestinian Affairs correspondent Gal Berger.

No further details of his death have been released.

The death comes as Hamas is apparently shifting its focus towards its naval commando units, with the terrorist group seeking new ways to infiltrate Israel and attack potentially high-value targets such as Israel’s offshore natural gas reserves.

Frustrated by the success of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, and wary of Israeli innovations to counter its expensive tunnel-digging efforts, Hamas appears to see its naval units as a possible alternative way to attack the Jewish state.

Hamas’s “naval commando” force hit headlines during 2014’s Operation Protective Edge, when scuba-diving terrorists attempted to infiltrate Israel’s coast to commit massacres against civilian population centers nearby. The terrorists had no success, however, with the IDF successfully neutralizing the threat repeatedly.

More recently, last month four Hamas terrorists from the same unit were arrested by Egyptian security forces as they crossed into the Sinai Peninsula en-route to Iran for special training.

Hamas responded angrily, calling on Egypt to release its members immediately.
