A panicked Zehava Gal-On said Thursday that contrary to the impression many on the right have, the media is “not on our side.”

Speaking on Israel Radio, Gal-On said that her Meretz party was not getting fair treatment from the media – because of its desire to “dump” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

That desire, the Meretz Chairwoman said, has led the media to treat Tzipi Livni and Yitzhak Herzog with kid gloves, because the media has determined that they have a better chance of replacing Netanyahu than Meretz does.

In essence, she claims, the media is downplaying Meretz’s chances of doing well in the elections, to the extent that it is predicting that the party will not receive the minimum number of votes needed for Knesset representation at all.

The raising of the electoral threshold for Knesset representation to a minimum of 3.25% means that parties must receive enough votes to qualify for four Knesset seats.

“All the polls we have taken show us getting at least six or seven seats, but the media is reporting it as if we are going to get less than needed for four seats, which is the minimum a party has to have for representation in the Knesset,” Gal-On said.

“This is just discouraging our voters, who the media is trying to get to drift to vote for Labor and strengthen its chances. They don’t realize that we are the true standard for the left.

“The commentators say that the only way to get rid of Netanyahu is to support Herzog and Livni, but they have stood shoulder to shoulder with Netanyahu,” she added.

“Livni and Herzog have already been part of right-wing governments with Netanyahu and Bennett.” 

“If you vote Meretz you will definitely get a center-left government led by Livni and Herzog ensuring they will do what needs to be done. If you vote for Herzog and Livni you might get a government with Netanyahu and Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett.”
