Frustration at Peace Talks Grows as Rockets Continue

Attorney Yoram Sheftel told Arutz Sheva Friday morning that the barrage of rocket fire from Gaza is a reminder of the “idiocy,” in his words, of the current government.

“This conflict illustrates the full nakedness of negotiations, which are the most foolish and freakish in history,” Sheftel fired, calling Gaza “Hamasstan.”

“Israel’s main demand in negotiations has been a declaration stating that the conflict [between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs] is over – and if this is the result, what’s the point of conducting the negotiations?” he added. “[Palestinian Authority Chairman] Mahmoud Abbas has no intention of achieving control over Gaza – and thus asking for a declaration to end the conflict will do nothing – so what is the point?”

“Suppose that Abbas would agree to a demilitarized state,” he theorized. “Hamasstan will continue to acquire rockets and missiles and we cannot 100% prevent arms smuggling into Gaza. The negotiations cannot solve all these issues and ensure peace – and yesterday we received a reminder of this.”

Islamic Jihad launched over 60 rockets at Israel on Wednesday, and rockets have continued to be fired at Israel since. While the IAF carried out an operation striking over 29 terror targets in Gaza to remedy the rocket rain, Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman (Yisrael Beytenu) stated that he was personally against carrying out any more operations that did not involve retaking Gaza and ending the problem once and for all.

Sheftel’s response reflects the fact that the US, while it condemned the rocket fire from Gaza, also has used the rocket fire to push for Israel to concede to numerous demands to the PA for peace, while also giving up the basic demand for the PA to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Numerous Western figures, including US Secretary of State John Kerry and British Prime Minister David Cameron, have stated that they believe that an agreement will solve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs – without noting the fact that the PA does not represent all Palestinian Arabs, nor the war of the Muslim world on the Jewish people living in the Land of Israel.
