French Rightist Le Pen May Sue Madonna for Use of Swastika

June 5, 2012

Marine Le Pen, leader of the French far-right, warned she may sue Madonna for superimposing a swastika on her forehead in a video presentation that accompanied her show in Israel.

Madonna, whose fans probably do not include Le Pen, performed a one-night show in Tel Aviv last week with videos of different faces, including one of LaPen with a superimposed swastika on her forehead along with Hitler’s eyes.

The rock star followed with a stint in the United Arab Emirates, where the swastika was not used and where she dressed more modestly than in Israel.

“If she does that in France, we’ll be waiting for her,” Le Pen told the London Daily Mail. Madonna is scheduled to perform in Paris on July 14, the date of Bastille Day, the French national holiday marking independence from the old monarchy, and in Nice the following month.

Madonna laced her performance and visit in Israel with the same calls for peace frequently uttered by entertainers visiting Israel.

Le Pen was not impressed. “By the way, has Madonna given back the children she stole from Africa? Or did she end up buying them?” she told the newspaper, referring to the singer’s two adopted children who were alleged by 85 NGOs to have been kidnapped by her.

Le Pen’s National Front party has been associated with extremism and sympathy to neo-Nazis, an image she has been trying to change.

The party shocked observers by winning 17.9 percent of the vote in last month’s presidential elections.

“We are not a Nazi party, and object to being depicted as such,” a party source reportedly told journalists, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Her late father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, was convicted several times for anti-Semitic statements. He also denied the Holocaust.
