French-Jewish politician found brutally murdered in his home

France’s Police Department is investigating the murder of a member of the Jewish community in Creteil, a suburb near Paris, who was found stabbed to death in his home on Tuesday, the French daily Metro News reports.

Alain Ghozland was a 73-year-old Jewish man and member of former French President Sarkozy’s party, “The Republicans.” He was found stabbed to death by police on Tuesday morning, after failing to show up at the community’s local synagogue for morning prayers, raising concern among his relatives, RTL reports.

The victim’s home had been torn apart and was in disarray.  Valuables were clearly stolen, including the victim’s car.

Nevertheless, French radio station Europe 1 reports that the front door of Ghozland’s house did not show signs of having been broken into.

Investigators are looking into whether the event was a robbery gone wrong, or an attempt to disguise a hate crime, as Ghozland was extremely involved in the Creteil Jewish community.

Sources within France’s judicial system said that an autopsy will be performed on the victim’s body in order to help determine the circumstances surrounding his death.

A memorial service will be held in Ghozland’s honor at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Grande Synagogue du Huit Mail in Creteil.
