Extreme Islamist organization to be outlawed
August 8, 2016Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan is moving to outlaw the “Hizb ut-Tahrir” organization and have it declared an illegal association.
Erdan will discuss the matter with Jerusalem district officials in the coming days and will then turn to the relevant judicial authorities.
Representatives of the Public Security ministry say the Hizb ut-Tahrir doesn’t recognize the right of the state of Israel to exist and supports the establishment of an Islamic caliphate to replace it.
Hizb ut-Tahrir (“Party of Liberation”) is an international pan-Islamic organization, that says its “ideology is Islam”, and strives to gather all the Muslim states under the orbit of a unified super-state, a renewal of the old caliphate, in which strict Shari’a law will be imposed.
The organization’s activities in Israel, says Public Security ministry officials, is centered around the Temple Mount. “The organization’s leaders spread their extreme doctrines from there, and encourage terror and incitement. It has been outlawed in various countries around the world for its extremist operations.”
After intelligence about Hizb ut-Tahrir reached Erdan, who has worked to outlaw similar organizations in the past, he decided to take action.
“It’s unacceptable that an organization that incites and supports terror, and has an ideology identical to that of ISIS, would be able to operate within Israel’s borders. I intend to do everything in my power to outlaw the organization. Declaring it an illegal association will enable broader law-enforcement activities against them, actions that aren’t legally possible as things stand now,” said Minister Erdan.
