Expert: Muslim Brotherhood May Seize Power in Egypt
November 23, 2011Middle East expert Dr. David Bukay of Haifa University said on Tuesday that he is concerned over the possibility that the extremist Muslim Brotherhood will take power in Egypt.
Bukay’s comments come on the heels of the renewed protests in Egypt, some of which have been led by the Muslim Brotherhood.
He told Arutz Sheva that he hopes that the elections in Egypt, scheduled for November 28, will be delayed and that the ruling military will calm down the riots.
“Israel is always better off with a military regime, be it in Egypt or in Syria, than the rise to power of the Muslim Brotherhood,” Bukay said. “If the Muslim Brotherhood comes to power, the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt will end.”
He suggested that the current riots in Egypt are none other than a provocation by the military regime itself so that it would have an excuse “to postpone the elections for fear of anarchy.”
Bukay compared the methods of the Muslim Brotherhood to those of Hamas when it took over power in Gaza, and said that the Brotherhood is making its way slowly but surely towards taking power.
“This how the Muslim Brotherhood operates, in stages,” he said. “It’s just like in Gaza, where Hamas began by taking over the hospices, then the trade unions and associations, and suddenly Fatah discovered that maybe they are in power but the entire infrastructure was taken over by Hamas.”
“This is what is actually happening today in Egypt,” Bukay added. “The Muslim Brotherhood is forming coalitions and gradually establishing an alternative government, and at some point they might seize power.”
The vehemently anti-Israel Muslim Brotherhood, banned from politics under Mubarak’s regime, has been eying the throne in Egypt since the revolution that resulted in Mubarak’s ouster.
The group’s leaders have publicly stated they would implement Muslim Sharia law in Egypt should they take office. The group recently won up to 35 percent support in pre-election polls.
