Egypt Reaffirms Commitment to Peace with Israel
September 17, 2011Egypt on Friday reaffirmed its commitment to the peace treaty signed with Israel in 1979.
An official with the Egyptian Foreign Ministry told the MENA news agency that Egypt is committed to all international agreements, including the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations.
The official added that Cairo will abide by the peace agreement with Israel if the latter does the same.
Egypt’s official reaffirmation came after earlier on Friday, Israeli Foreign Ministry officials summoned the Egyptian Ambassador to Israel, Yasser Reda, to clarify statements made by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf that “the peace agreement with Israel is not sacred and is always open for discussion.”
Foreign Ministry director Rafi Barak expressed indignation at the statements and stressed to Reda at the meeting that the agreements should be honored literally.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Reda and Barak had met, and in a statement quoted by the DPA news agency added that Israel “expressed hope that the Egyptian side will help in the normal resumption of the Israeli embassy’s operation in Cairo.”
The Israeli Embassy in Cairo was evacuated and the representatives flown back to Israel last Friday, after an angry mob who protested outside the embassy managed to break down the wall surrounding it and almost lynched six Israeli security guards.
Israel’s Ambassador to Egypt, Yitzhak Levanon, said earlier this week that Egypt has become a different country since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak, but clarified that he intends to return to Egypt and re-open the embassy nonetheless.
