Egypt: Israeli Ambassador Welcome Any Time

Diplomatic sources in Cairo said the Egyptian government is willing to receive the new Israeli ambassador whenever Israel wishes to send them. The matter is not dependent on diplomatic or security conditions, Cairo daily Al Ahram quoted them as saying Wednesday.

The sources said that that the timing for the arrival of a new ambassador is up to Israel and that the Egyptian government will not intervene in the matter.

The outgoing Israeli ambassador, Yitzchak Levanon – who has been in Israel since shortly after a mob stormed the Cairo embassy two months ago – returned to Cairo Sunday for a quick meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister, which formally ended his term as ambassador. He then flew back to Israel.

Veteran diplomat Yaakov Amitai was appointed to replace him.

Arutz Sheva’s Arab affairs expert Dalit Halevy explained Wednesday that the renewal of activity at the Israeli embassy depends on the internal security situation in Cairo, which is currently unstable. The embassy’s location is problematic because it is close to Cairo University, a hotbed of anti-Israel sentiment.
