Shas chairman MK Aryeh Deri hinted on Tuesday evening that his party would recommend Binyamin Netanyahu for Prime Minister after the elections on March 17.
Speaking at an election rally, Deri said that Shas was interested in having Netanyahu re-elected, but also called on the Prime Minister to change his policy.
“We are with you Binyamin Netanyahu. Our public and your public are brothers. We want you Bibi Begin, not Bibi Lapid,” he said.
Deri added, “We wish the prime minister, who traveled to the United States, luck in representing us against the evil Haman of today. Just do not forget the Jews of Israel, because for two years you have harmed them.”
Deri has been ambiguous thus far in declaring who he will support following the elections. He has in the past declared that Shas has “no sacred covenant” with the right and that it did not matter to the party whether Netanyahu or Yitzhak Herzog will be Prime Minister.
Last week, however, he stated he would support Netanyahu after the March 17 election, but only if the government agrees to accept Shas’s conditions, which revolve mostly around the issue of fighting poverty.
Deri is centering his election campaign on the lower class, to whom he refers as the “transparent Israelis”.
