Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home) and Minister of Social Affairs Haim Katz (Likud) are initiating a new law that would provide greater protection of Youth Laws – including trial, punishment and treatment methods.
According to the initiative, a minor’s parents or legal guardian will have full rights to be present during all stages of juvenile investigation.
As a result, before making important decisions in an investigation on matters such as extending the duration of an investigation or granting permission to a minor who wants to leave the investigation premises, there must be consent from a parent.
Moreover, the investigation itself will require a properly trained youth investigator to administer the questioning and it may be conducted in an approved location other than a police station.
“I see great importance in maintaining Youth laws. Just like I waged a war against distributing offensive photos of minors through the Whatsapp application, the need to protect minors, even those suspected of committing a crime, is important,” said Minister Shaked
“Parents must supervise what is happening with their children, and the new law will guranttee it even in criminal cases. Moreover, many youth ‘break under pressure’ and we must be certain they only admit to offenses they actually committed. I thank the Minister of Social Affairs, Haim Katz, for assisting me with this bill,” said Shaked.
