Budapest Jewish Leader Attacked While Leaving Synagogue

Police in Budapest said they have arrested two men after a Jewish community leader was attacked after leaving synagogue Friday night, AFP reported.
Andras Kerenyi, 62, president of the local branch of the Budapest Jewish Faith Community, was verbally and physically assaulted on the night of Oct. 5, as he was leaving the Sabbath prayer services, according to a statement on the Budapest police website.
The two attackers were detained and charged with violent assault against a member of a community group.
Kerenyi only suffered minor injuries during the attack and did not require hospitalization.
Gusztav Zoltai, the director of the Alliance of Hungarian Jewish Faith Communities, told Hungarian state news agency MTI that Kereneyi was kicked in the stomach by the assailants who shouted, “Rotten filthy Jews, you will all die”.
Earlier this year, Hungary’s Chief Rabbi, Jozsef Schweitzer, was verbally abused on a street in Budapest by an assailant who shouted, “I loathe all Jews.”
