Britain May Compensate Salah for Arrest

October 2, 2011

Britain may compensate Israeli hate preacher Sheikh Raed Salah due to immigration officers’ failure to immediately translate a deportation order into Arabic for him. Salah was detained in Britain after violating an order prohibiting his entrance to the country.

The reason for his detention was explained in Arabic only 34 hours after his arrest.

Salah can apply for thousands of pounds of compensation money if he decides to do so. He is currently free on bail, and is staying in London while waiting for a hearing in which he plans to fight the deportation order.

Salah heads the northern branch of the Islamic Movement, which is the Israeli branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. He has been repeatedly charged with incitement and hate speech in Israel, and served two years in prison for fundraising for Hamas.

He was more recently in prison for assaulting a police officer.  After his release he was arrested again, on suspicion of setting a fire in a forest in protest of Israeli forestation projects, just months after the worst forest fire in Israel’s history.

MK Alex Miller (Yisrael Beiteinu) has submitted a bill that would bar Salah from speaking at government-funded schools and universities in Israel.
